Imagine a place where you could find quality Christmas gifts at bargain prices, get in the spirit with holiday music, go back in time with vintage model railroad layout, bring tots to meet the Jolly Old Elf himself and provide youngsters with a place to buy gifts for Mom, Dad, brothers and sisters.
The public will be able to do all that and more in the Victorian-era Oller House on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 and 21, following Friday's Christmas Tree Lighting and Saturday's Christmas Parade in downtown Waynesboro.
The historical society is planning its first-ever Holiday Gift Auction and Open House on those days with a host of activities planned for the entire family.
The activities will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21.
Silent auction, raffle
Board members have solicited a host of local businesses, individuals and craftsmen for donations for the silent auction that will be held both days, culminating at 4 p.m. Saturday. (A list of the donors and the items received so far is on page ???)
Visitors are invited to place bids for such items as gift certificates, crafts, books, clothing, art prints, a mirror, gym memberships, food, dinners, baskets, portrait packages, reproduction John Bell pottery, a vacuum and pet items.
Also at 4 p.m. Saturday, the winner of the handmade dollhouse crafted by Ray Beard will be selected by random drawing. The winner of the dollhouse, as well as the winners of all the items donated for the silent auction, will be notified by telephone between 4 and 6 p.m.. Tickets for the dollhouse raffle will be on sale both days for $1 apiece or six for $5.
These are a few of the many items donated so far for the Waynesboro Historical Society's first-ever Holiday Gift Auction to be held Nov. 20 and 21.
The events
Santa's Workshop will be open both Friday and Saturday. Children will be able to buy inexpensive gifts for their parents and siblings in the decorated second-floor workshop. Items will include costume jewelry, beauty items, a Sudoku puzzle, books, toys, coffee mugs and puzzle books.
Mrs. Santa will be at the Oller House from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday following the Christmas tree lighting in Center Square.
Santa arrives on Saturday during the Christmas parade, and following the parade, he will be at the Oller House hearing Christmas wishes and posing for photos with youngsters and handing out candy canes. Parents are reminded to bring their cameras to capture the one-on-one visits with Santa.
From 4 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, a choral group from Christ United Methodist Church will sing holiday favorites.
On both days, Charlie Kauffman's vintage trains will be on display on the second-floor sleeping porch. Kauffman's Lionel trains were made after World War II and will be set up at eye level so children can admire them.
In case the weather is chilly, visitors can warm up with hot coffee and cookies inside the Oller House.
The Oller House porch will be decorated with a vintage sleigh owned by board members Jeff and Sheila Zody. |
